New York

The Craftsman Studios, New York

The earliest incarnation of The Craftsman Studios began in Brooklyn, New York in 1919 and lasted until 1921. Here is the progression (from information from Glenn Griffin):

The first known location is 3420 Avenue D, Brooklyn, NY. Using Google Maps, this appears to be a residence still in existence! Did Carl Wirths first operate out of his home?

The second known location is 191 Fulton Street, Brooklyn. Here’s where it gets a little confusing. There is a Fulton Street in New York and Brooklyn. However, 191 Fulton in New York is a church and only 190 Fulton appears to exist in Brooklyn, but with no real location. More research needs to go into this.

New York Makers Marks and Catalogues

No maker’s marks, die stamp or otherwise, appears to have been found on these pieces;  however, according to Glenn, apparently the gift boxes were hand-illuminated, strongly suggesting some sort of makers mark.

While I have not yet seen a full example, there certainly exists at least one CS New York catalogue that shows pieces from this era. Below is a screen capture of one of the catalogue pages, or part thereof, from a collector friend. Following that are three examples of one of the frames, (No. 163)! Note the numbers scribbled adjacent to the catalogue images; this suggests that there were indeed design numbers for manufacturing purposes.

The above frame is constructed of either German Silver (mainly nickel) or some sort of pewter or white metal. See below for two more examples of this frame in copper and of two different sizes.

The pieces here were mostly silver on copper tie pins, bouquet holders, cufflinks, hat pins, brooches, bar pins and fobs (often attributed to Heintz), and some solid pierced white metal pieces, some with stones (often attributed to Forest Craft Guild). There were also silver rings of various forms.

Desk Items, Picture Frames, Etc.

The desk items are exemplified by acid-etched and/or pierced copper bookends, ink wells, desk sets, trays, paper knives, sconces, ashtrays, and calendars. I know of one example of an etched basket. The pierced pieces were often attributed to the Forest Craft Guild and the etched pieces to Clarence Crafters (Frost pieces are different, IMHO). The interesting and beautiful picture frames and motto bookends are particularly noteworthy.

A cool story will follow this particular frame — safe to say, Carl Wirths was a Cavalry man and there is more than one of these frames in existence.

The largest CS frame I know of: 12 inches high and quite heavy. It’s missing the rear kickstand, but this was meant to stand on a mantle or desk, not be hung as one might think of such a large frame.

More coming…
